Construction of Small Hydropower Plant Begins on Orto-Tokoi Reservoir in Kyrgyzstan

On June 29, 2024, the Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov, initiated the construction of a small hydropower plant (HPP) on the Orto-Tokoi reservoir. This project aims to provide electricity to more than 14,000 consumers in Balykchy, as reported by the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers.

During the ceremony marking the laying of the capsule at the construction site in the Issyk-Kul region, Akylbek Japarov emphasized the significance of this milestone for the national energy sector. He stated, “Today we have laid a capsule for the construction of a small hydropower plant on Orto-Tokoi reservoir, which in the future will provide more than 14,000 consumers of Balykchy with electricity. We are making confident steps towards energy independence.”

Furthermore, Japarov highlighted the progress in other hydropower projects in the country, including the recent launch of the Bala-Saruu HPP and the upcoming construction of an HPP on the Papan reservoir. He also mentioned the advancement of the national project Kambarata HPP-1, aiming to position Kyrgyzstan as a significant hydropower republic.

The capacity of the Orto-Tokoi HPP will be 21 megawatts, with the project being part of the Anti-Crisis Action Plan approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. The construction contract was signed with the Chinese company China National Machinery Industry Corporation (CNMIC) and Chakan HPP.

Looking ahead, Japarov expressed optimism for the economic growth and development of Kyrgyzstan, emphasizing the country’s partnership with China. He envisioned a prosperous future for Balykchy, comparing it to developed cities like Shanghai or Hong Kong.

The construction of the small hydropower plant on Orto-Tokoi reservoir marks a significant step towards enhancing the energy infrastructure in Kyrgyzstan and moving towards a more sustainable and independent energy supply.
