Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to Run for Re-election in 2025
The Central Election Commission of Belarus has reported that the current President, Alexander Lukashenko, is registered as a candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Alongside Lukashenko, there are four other candidates vying for the top post.
Lukashenko has garnered significant support, with over 2.5 million signatures collected in his favor. In contrast, the other candidates have each gathered just over 100,000 signatures.
The presidential election in Belarus is scheduled to take place on January 26, 2025, with the pre-election campaign set to begin on January 1.
Lukashenko, who first assumed office in 1994 and has been re-elected six times since, has highlighted the readiness of the opposition for radical actions. He has signaled that the authorities must be prepared to respond appropriately.
Following the controversial presidential elections in 2020, mass protests erupted in Belarus, calling for Lukashenko’s resignation. The protests were met with a harsh crackdown by government forces.
