Ankara Endures Another Round of Flooding and Hail

Ankara Hit by Heavy Rain and Flooding Once Again
Ankara, Turkey’s capital city, was hit by torrential rain and hail on May 29, causing flooding and chaos on the streets. Images captured by locals showed cars submerged in water and pedestrians struggling to make their way through flooded roads.
The Etimesgut district, which was hit by flooding in the last rainfall, was spared this time, with the Keçiören district being the hardest hit. The downpour combined with water from a nearby waterfall to create an even more dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians alike.
A driver was trapped under a flooded bridge and had to wait in his vehicle until the water subsided. The garden of Keçiören Municipality and the Population Directorate were also severely impacted by the heavy rain.
In addition, a street market and a carpet field were flooded, forcing children to be evacuated from the field and causing great difficulties for marketplace tradesmen.
The situation in Xinjiang was not much better, with flooding occurring after the torrential rain. Cars had difficulty navigating through flooded streets, and some citizens were trapped in their vehicles and needed to be rescued.
It’s unclear whether there were any injuries or fatalities as a result of the floods. However, the images serve as a stark reminder of the serious impact that climate change can have on cities like Ankara, which is situated in an area which experiences regular bouts of extreme weather.
