Apple Settles “Siri” Case for $95 Million

Apple Agrees to $95 Million Settlement in Siri Privacy Lawsuit

Apple has reached a preliminary agreement to settle a lawsuit over privacy concerns related to its voice assistant technology, Siri. The agreement, which is pending approval by Judge Jeffrey White of the Northern District Court of California, was filed in federal court in Oakland.

The lawsuit alleged that Siri could be activated unintentionally and that recorded conversations of users were shared with third parties without their consent. Despite denying the accusations, Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle the case.

If the agreement is approved, users of Siri-enabled devices in the US will be eligible to receive payments of up to $20 per device. The settlement will cover users who owned a Siri-enabled iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch, or Apple TV between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024.

Siri first made its debut on iPhone 4S models in 2011 and introduced the “Hey Siri” feature in 2014, allowing users to activate the voice assistant hands-free.

This settlement serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting user privacy and the need for companies to be transparent about how they handle sensitive data. Apple’s agreement to settle the lawsuit demonstrates its commitment to addressing concerns raised by consumers regarding privacy issues related to its products.
