Apple to Scale Back Release of Augmented Reality Headsets

Apple Reduces Plans for Augmented Reality Headsets due to Defects and Complexity
Tech giant Apple has decided to lower its production plans for the highly anticipated augmented reality headsets, Vision Pro, from 1 million units to 400 thousand units in 2024, according to a report by the Financial Times. The main reason behind this reduction is the high number of defects encountered during the creation of OLED displays. Additionally, the company has found that the device itself is too complicated.
Suppliers of components for the Vision Pro have confirmed that Apple has significantly decreased its orders, indicating that the company might face difficulties in scaling up production for the new device in the near future. This setback could negatively impact the availability and accessibility of the augmented reality headsets.
Apple first unveiled the Vision Pro to the public in June 2023. The headset offers users the ability to fully immerse themselves in mixed and virtual reality experiences, running on a special visionOS operating system that requires compatibility with iOS applications. The release of Vision Pro was initially scheduled for early 2024, with a price tag of $3499.
It remains to be seen how Apple will address the issues faced in the production of the augmented reality headsets and whether the company will be able to overcome the obstacles to meet the expected demand. The reduction in production plans could disappoint potential buyers and impact Apple’s future plans in the augmented reality market.
The technology community eagerly awaits further updates from Apple on the progress of the Vision Pro headsets and if any solutions will be implemented to ensure a smooth launch in the coming year.
