Oltin Qalam National Award: Celebrating Excellence in Journalism

The Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with various partner organizations, proudly announces the 19th edition of the Oltin Qalam National Award—an international competition dedicated to recognizing outstanding achievements in journalism.

Purpose of the Award

This prestigious contest aims to spotlight innovative accomplishments in both national and international journalism. It seeks to align with the progressive vision of the New Uzbekistan by promoting a new mindset among journalists, enriching national content, and upholding human dignity. The Oltin Qalam Award aspires to enhance public awareness and critical thinking, strengthen societal transparency and openness, and encourage civic engagement among media professionals while fostering analytical thinking and creative innovation among journalists.

Main Awards Categories

The competition features several categories, each recognizing excellence in various forms of media:

  1. Television Category

    • National award for the best journalistic piece (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places).
  2. Radio Category

    • National award for the best journalistic piece (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places).
  3. Print Media Category

    • National award for the best journalistic piece (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places).
  4. Online Media Category

    • National award for the best journalistic piece (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places).
  5. Best Article About Uzbekistan by a Foreign Journalist
    • One 1st place winner and four 2nd place winners across TV, radio, print, and online media.

Additionally, there will be 12 special categories whose details will be announced later.

Prizes and Recognition

Winners will receive various forms of recognition, highlighting their outstanding contributions:

  • Grand Prize Winner: A special diploma, the Oltin Qalam statuette, and a car.
  • 1st Place Winners: A diploma, statuette, and a cash prize equivalent to 200 times the base calculation unit (BCU).
  • 2nd Place Winners: A diploma, statuette, and 175 BCUs.
  • 3rd Place Winners: A diploma, statuette, and 150 BCUs.
  • Special Nominations Winners: Each will receive a diploma, statuette, and 100 BCUs.

Entry Guidelines

Participants can submit 5 to 7 works published in print or online media or aired on radio or television between April 30, 2024, and April 30, 2025. Specific submission requirements include:

  • For media collectives:
    • Print outlets must submit 5–7 issues of their publication.
    • Broadcast outlets must provide electronic versions or links to their best 5–7 radio or TV programs.

For those entering the “Best Publicistic Book Published in 2024” category, one copy of the book must be submitted to the Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan.

Required Documents

Each submission should include:

  • A brief biography of the author, detailing their professional background.
  • A copy of the author’s passport or ID, along with a phone number.
  • For collective submissions: a media registration certificate or a copy of the ID of the organization’s head.

Submission Process

Entries will be accepted through the Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan and its regional branches, as well as Uzbekistan’s diplomatic missions abroad (with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Authors can also submit their work electronically from the announcement date until May 25.

The Oltin Qalam National Award not only recognizes journalistic excellence but also aims to uplift the values of transparency and critical thinking in society, paving the way for a more informed and engaged public.
