Ukrainian President Leads Summit to End Europe’s Biggest War in Eight Decades
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has gathered world leaders in Switzerland for a historic summit aimed at developing a roadmap to end Europe’s biggest war in eight decades. Despite the absence of Russian and Chinese officials, Zelenskiy remains optimistic about the potential for progress.
Representatives from 101 countries and international organizations have convened at Buergenstock, a mountain resort near Lucerne, Switzerland, for two days of talks focused on ending Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The conflict has taken a heavy toll, resulting in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of thousands of people on both sides.
During the opening remarks on June 15, Zelenskiy expressed confidence in the collective effort to bring peace to the region. He emphasized the importance of global cooperation in ending the war and establishing a just peace. The summit aims to rally support for Ukraine and demonstrate solidarity among nations.
While more than 50 heads of state and government, primarily from Europe, are in attendance, some countries have sent lower-level delegations. The United States is represented by Vice President Kamala Harris and White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, as President Joe Biden returned home following his meetings with Zelenskiy in Europe.
Despite Russia’s refusal to participate in the summit, President Vladimir Putin made a last-minute offer to cease-fire and negotiate if Kyiv surrendered territory and abandoned plans to join NATO. However, Ukraine dismissed this proposal as an attempt to derail the summit.
Experts have tempered expectations for significant developments at the summit, anticipating incremental progress in international solidarity with Ukraine. Zelenskiy’s 10-point peace plan, which includes ending hostilities, withdrawing Russian troops, and restoring Ukraine’s borders, faces challenges in the current battlefield dynamics.
The summit’s agenda focuses on nuclear safety, prisoner exchanges, and global food security. Russia’s invasion has disrupted food supplies, leading to price increases that impact vulnerable countries in Africa and the Middle East.
As world leaders gather in Switzerland, the conflict in Ukraine shows no signs of slowing down. Russia’s continued aggression and Ukraine’s challenges in defending against the offensive underscore the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution.
In the lead-up to the summit, the Group of 7 announced a $50 billion loan package for Ukraine, supported by frozen Russian assets. The United States also signed a security agreement with Ukraine, committing to continued training and military support.
While the road to peace remains uncertain, Zelenskiy’s efforts to engage global leaders and pursue diplomatic solutions offer hope for a brighter future in Ukraine. The summit serves as a crucial step towards ending the devastating conflict and restoring stability in the region.
