Armenia’s Ombudsperson Raises Alarm over Threat to Innocent People in Mine-Ridden Region

Armenia’s Ongoing Mine Terror Continues to Threaten Lives in Azerbaijan
In recent news, the devastating impact of Armenia’s ongoing mine terror has once again been brought to light. Reports indicate that as a result of mine explosions in Jabrayil and Aghdam, four Azerbaijani citizens, including children, were seriously injured. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder that the mine danger in the region persists, putting the lives of innocent people at constant risk.
According to the appeal made by the Ombudsperson of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, a total of 392 individuals have been either killed or injured since 2020 due to mines laid by the Armenian side and unexploded ordnance. This alarming statistic highlights the far-reaching consequences of this issue, affecting not only the physical well-being but also the psychological and social conditions of the affected individuals.
The presence of mines in Azerbaijani territories that were occupied by Armenia poses a significant obstacle to the establishment of lasting peace in the region. There is a pressing need for international cooperation and assistance to address this urgent threat and prevent further loss of life.
It is crucial for Armenia to take responsibility for the humanitarian situation in the mined territories and adhere to international law. The deliberate act of laying mines constitutes a serious violation of human rights and hinders the efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
As the Ombudsperson rightfully points out, the international community must recognize the importance of demining activities, support Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts in this regard, and hold Armenia accountable for its actions. It is only through collective action and a commitment to justice that we can ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals living in the region affected by this dangerous legacy of conflict.
