ASELSAN’s EIRS Radar Detects ISS from Over 700 km Away

The Early Warning Radar System (EIRS), utilizing domestic Gallium Nitrate (GaN) transistors, successfully detected the International Space Station from a distance of 700+ km during Alper Gezeravcı’s tenure. This groundbreaking achievement was shared by ASELSAN General Manager Ahmet Akyol during the SAHA MBA Senior Bureaucrat and Sector Leaders Training presentation.

At the fourth Military Radar and Border Security summit in 2023, ASELSAN Deputy General Manager Dr. Mustafa Akkul announced the utilization of the first S-band native transistors produced by AB Mikronano. He highlighted the use of domestic GaN transistors in the ASELSAN Early Warning Radar System (EIRS) and their role in enhancing detection capabilities.

The Early Warning Radar System (EIRS) is a cutting-edge S-Band radar designed for long-range early warning purposes, featuring an antenna architecture based on AESA and digital beamforming infrastructure. In addition to detecting air-breathing targets, EIRS can also track ballistic missiles and stealth technology-equipped targets from long distances. Its AESA and digital beamforming architecture enable the system to form multiple beams simultaneously, enhancing its tracking capabilities.

EIRS leverages meteorological data to enhance its detection and tracking performance. The radar, communication/command control, and power subsystems of EIRS are mounted on tactical vehicles, providing high mobility without the need for disassembly. By integrating with existing radar networks, EIRS can share critical information and 3D air images with other systems and Control Reporting Centers.

The radar system also supports data fusion with other EIRS systems and facilitates target transfer, crucial for ballistic missile defense. Its electronic protection features, such as frequency and time mobility, contribute to its operational effectiveness. The integration of a long-range Mode 5 IFF interrogator further enhances the radar’s operational capabilities.

Overall, the Early Warning Radar System (EIRS) represents a significant advancement in radar technology, combining advanced features with a modular design approach to ensure high readiness and operational efficiency. The successful detection of the International Space Station from a significant distance underscores the system’s capability to meet the evolving challenges in defense and security.
