
Ashgabat’s Commitment to Ocean Conservation: Key Focus of UNESCO Mission

Turkmenistan Participates in Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Assembly
The Director of the Caspian Sea Institute of Turkmenistan, Myrat Atajanov, recently attended the XXXII session of the Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, a subdivision of UNESCO. The event took place from June 21 to June 30 and aimed to discuss the election and appointment of candidates for key positions within the organization.
Accompanying the head of the Institute, the Turkmen diplomatic corps led by Ambassador Maksat Charyev also participated in the event. Over the course of the meetings, reports on the Commission’s program implementation were presented, and an insightful exchange of views on current oceanography research was conducted.
During these discussions, the Turkmen representatives expressed their keen interest in oceanography studies and their commitment to conserving the oceans and the marine ecosystem as a whole, including the Caspian Sea. They highlighted the unique characteristics of the coastal ecosystem and the diverse species that inhabit it.
Furthermore, Turkmenistan officially announced its dedication to enhancing scientific and technical capabilities through active participation in the Executive Council of the Commission for sustainable development of marine resources.
