Assassination of Sahnaya Mayor Amid Rising Tensions in Syria
On Thursday, a shocking attack claimed the lives of the mayor of Sahnaya and his son in a troubling incident in a tumultuous suburb of Damascus. The mayor, identified as Warwar, was targeted by unidentified gunmen shortly after the deployment of security forces from Syria’s Interior and Defense ministries to address escalating violence in the area.
Warwar had appeared in a video just a day prior, discussing the government’s efforts to restore peace after the General Security Directorate had entered the town. His murder comes in the wake of significant unrest involving Druze residents and government-aligned fighters, which has seen violence spill over into neighboring Jaramana, claiming nearly 40 lives.
The Syrian government had recently begun troop movements into Sahnaya to gain control of the situation. By evening, state news agency SANA reported that a preliminary ceasefire agreement had been established between conflicting local factions, with officials committing to the protection of all communities, including the Druze.
As tensions flared, an Israeli drone strike targeted a Syrian security patrol near Sahnaya, marking Israel’s first known direct intervention concerning Syria’s Druze minority since the civil war began. Damascus Governor Amer al-Sheikh confirmed that the strike resulted in the deaths of one officer and a local civilian, with several others injured.
Israel’s military stated that their operation aimed at "extremists involved in attacks on Druze civilians." Reports indicated that the missile struck a location where armed individuals were allegedly planning assaults against Druze-populated areas.
In a notable humanitarian gesture, Israeli officials announced the evacuation of three injured Druze individuals from Syria for medical treatment in Israel.
In response to the drone strike, Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned the action without explicitly naming Israel, denouncing "all forms of foreign interference" and reaffirming its commitment to safeguard all segments of the Syrian population, including the esteemed Druze community.
