AT&T and AST SpaceMobile Partner to Bring Satellite Communications to Everyday Smartphones
Mobile operator AT&T and satellite operator AST SpaceMobile have announced a groundbreaking partnership to bring satellite communications to standard smartphones. This long-term commercial agreement, set to last until 2030, will initially launch in the United States before expanding to cover all countries worldwide.
The collaboration will see the deployment of the first five satellites this summer, providing coverage across the continental United States. AT&T’s network chief, Chris Sambar, will also join AST SpaceMobile’s board of directors as part of the partnership. This move aims to facilitate close collaboration between the telecom giant and satellite operator in testing, troubleshooting, and enhancing the satellite constellation, with a focus on the United States initially.
While AT&T has not yet disclosed the service’s launch date or pricing details, this move marks a significant step towards revolutionizing global connectivity. Interestingly, SpaceX is also working on a similar network in collaboration with T-Mobile.
