Kyrgyzstan Authorities Refuse to Rehabilitate Fugitive President Kurmanbek Bakiyev

The authorities of Kyrgyzstan have made it clear that they do not intend to rehabilitate the fugitive former president, Kurmanbek Bakiyev. The head of the Information Policy Service of the Presidential Executive Office, Daiyrbek Orunbekov, stated this on Facebook.

This statement comes in response to the construction of a garment factory by Kurmanbek Bakiyev for the families of those killed in the April 2010 events. Orunbekov explained that the construction of the factory was a result of personal negotiations between Bakiyev and 217 citizens who lost loved ones during the April revolution. The state merely fulfilled the request of the participants of the April revolution to allocate land for the factory.

Orunbekov also emphasized that if the promises made by the Bakiyevs regarding the factory are not fulfilled within six months, the state reserves the right to take back the allocated land.

In the past, participants of the April revolution and their relatives have been vocal about their opposition to the return of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who was overthrown in 2010.

President Sadyr Japarov has confirmed that land has been allocated for the construction of an enterprise by the joint stock company 7 April Yntymagy, which is meant to provide jobs for 200 people affected by the April events.

Furthermore, an appeal was made in 2023 on behalf of the victims of the April events for monetary compensation from Kurmanbek Bakiyev. This led to several rallies by participants of the April revolution demanding the arrest of the former president.

It is clear that the issue of Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s involvement in the country remains contentious, with the authorities standing firm in their refusal to rehabilitate him.
