Azamat Maripov Placed in Pretrial Detention Center for Two Months
In a recent development, Facebook user Azamat Maripov has been placed in the pretrial detention center No. 1 for a duration of two months. This decision was made by the Pervomaisky District Court and confirmed by the press service of the same court.
The ruling was issued on March 9, following a petition from the investigator of the Investigative Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Azamat Maripov, charged under the article “Calls for active disobedience to the legal demands of government officials and for mass riots, as well as calls for violence against citizens” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, will remain in custody for the prescribed period.
Azamat Maripov’s case dates back to April 2024 when he was initially detained. At that time, the Department of Internal Affairs of Leninsky district reported the detention of six men suspected of beating and holding a Bishkek resident. Social media played a significant role in shedding light on the incident, with some users identifying the detained individuals as members of the Mekenchil party.
Furthermore, allegations have surfaced regarding a financial transaction involving Azamat Maripov and the head of the Presidential and Cabinet Affairs Department, Kanybek Tumanbaev. It is reported that Tumanbaev provided Maripov with $13,000 for a wedding, after which Maripov and others allegedly engaged in blackmail against Tumanbaev.
