Azerbaijani Leader Highlights China’s Key Role in Priorities

Azerbaijan’s Strategic Relationship with China
In a recent interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev emphasized the significance of China in his country’s foreign policy. Reflecting on the historical ties established by Azerbaijan’s National Leader, Heydar Aliyev, he articulated how these foundations have endured and evolved.
President Aliyev highlighted that Heydar Aliyev’s pioneering visit to China in 1994 marked the beginning of strong bilateral relations. He noted, “His legacy is dear for all of us. We follow his path, including in our foreign policy priorities.” Emphasizing the consistency of these priorities, he stated that China holds a "special place" in Azerbaijan’s strategic outlook.
The president acknowledged that while the world and Azerbaijan have changed significantly over the last two decades, the approach towards China remains steadfast. “If he could see from heaven where we are now, I think he would be proud of Azerbaijan and of the Chinese-Azerbaijani relationship.”
Aliyev praised China’s modernization and reform efforts, asserting that the path of progress taken by China serves as an inspiration for many nations. “My primary objective when I assumed office was to preserve political and social stability,” he explained, referring to the challenges Azerbaijan faced at the time, including external influences from Western circles.
With a focus on sustainable development, Aliyev mentioned that Azerbaijan has significantly improved its economic standing. He pointed out that the country’s foreign debt is currently less than 7% of GDP, with hard currency reserves exceeding the debt by 14 times. Additionally, unemployment and poverty levels have dropped to 5%.
As part of its diversification efforts, Azerbaijan is also prioritizing a green agenda, with President Aliyev noting the important role China plays in this initiative. “The solar panels installed in Azerbaijan are made in China,” he stated, underscoring the ongoing collaboration between the two countries in advancing sustainable technologies.
Overall, President Aliyev’s remarks illustrate Azerbaijan’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its relationship with China, rooted in a shared history and mutual aspirations for stability and economic growth.
