Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Attends Pope Francis’ Funeral Service
On April 26, Sahiba Gafarova, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan, participated in the funeral ceremony of Pope Francis held at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. The significant event drew renowned leaders from around the world, including heads of state and government, parliamentary leaders, religious figures, and notable public personalities, reflecting the global impact of the late Pope.
Gafarova represented Azerbaijan during this solemn occasion, demonstrating the country’s respect for the religious leader and the Catholic Church. Her participation underscores Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue and international collaboration.
In addition to attending the funeral, Gafarova met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher. During these meetings, she conveyed condolences on behalf of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, further strengthening diplomatic ties between Azerbaijan and the Vatican.
