Azerbaijan’s Flag Raised in New Caledonia Amid Unrest
New Caledonia, a beautiful Pacific archipelago with its capital Noumea, is home to a diverse population. Around 41 percent of the residents are indigenous Kanaks, while 24 percent are Europeans of mostly French heritage.
Tensions between these two communities have been a historical issue, with deadly violence erupting in the past, notably in 1984. However, recent referendums held on New Caledonia’s independence in 2018, 2020, and 2021 have shown that the majority of voters have chosen to remain a French territory.
Despite past conflicts, the people of New Caledonia continue to strive for unity and peace. The stunning views of Noumea serve as a reminder of the beauty and diversity that the archipelago has to offer.
