Azerbaijan’s President Turns Down Moscow’s May 9 Parade Invitation

Azerbaijan’s President Opts for Domestic Events Over Victory Day Celebration in Moscow
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev will not be attending the upcoming celebration in Moscow marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. This announcement was made by Yury Ushakov, aide to the President of Russia, further indicating a shift in Azerbaijan’s diplomatic engagements.
Ushakov previously disclosed that the Kremlin had extended invitations to leaders of 29 nations, including Aliyev, for the May 9 parade. However, he confirmed that the Azerbaijani leader has opted to participate in local events dedicated to the legacy of Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s former president.
Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia have experienced significant strain since December 2024, particularly following a tragic incident involving an Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft in Kazakhstan. Reports suggest that the crash was linked to actions from Russia’s air defense system, which has further complicated diplomatic ties.
This year marks the first time since 2015 that Aliyev will miss the May 9 parade in Moscow, signaling a potential shift in Azerbaijan’s foreign policy and its relationship with Russia. As the country focuses on domestic partnerships and commemorations, it remains to be seen how this decision will influence regional dynamics.
