Baku-Boyuk-Kasik Railway Line Reconstruction Deadline Announced

The Azerbaijan Railways CJSC has announced plans to complete the reconstruction of the power supply system of the Baku – Boyuk-Kasik railway line within the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars international railway corridor project by 2027. This project includes modernizing communication and signaling systems along the railway line, with a focus on switching to alternating current.
Currently, the Boyuk-Kasik – Ujar section operates on alternating current, and the next phase will involve transitioning the Hajigabul-Baku section to operate on the same system. The overhaul of 917 kilometers of the Baku – Boyuk-Kasik railway line was carried out between 2010 and 2014 as part of the state program for the development of the railway transport system.
In July 2020, a historic test was conducted with the participation of Rail Trans Service LLC to transition to an alternating current system. The first test run of a new alternating current electric locomotive took place at Alabashli station. This transition is expected to increase the volume of goods transported by rail and the number of passengers due to improved traction of electric locomotives.
Overall, the completion of the power supply system reconstruction is a significant milestone in the development of the Baku – Boyuk-Kasik railway line and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars international railway corridor.
