Banks Update: New Setting for Depositing Interests – Breaking News
The Central Bank of Turkey took a bold step on March 20 by increasing its overnight lending interest rate to a staggering 46 percent. This move led to an update in all loans and deposits in the market, with noticeable changes in vehicle, need, and housing loan interest rates. Banks also started offering deposits with higher interest rates, with some banks even reaching rates as high as 50 percent.
At the same time, for the first time in 52 months, deposit interest rates provided a 39.18 percent return on an annual basis in March. This increase in deposit interest rates can be attributed to uncertainties surrounding US tariffs, global trade, and geopolitical risks, which have prompted investors to seek out lower-risk investment options such as gold and interest-bearing instruments.
Hikmet Baydar, founder of the 3th Eye Consultancy, explained that the interest rate hike was influenced by internal developments, including tax policies imposed by the previous US administration. This forced the Central Bank to adopt a tighter monetary policy, leading to the increase in lending rates and the suspension of weekly repo tenders.
With banks now offering more attractive deposit rates to attract funds, the competition for deposits has intensified. The current 32-35 day deposit rates offered by banks are considered quite attractive, with minimal risk and a real return of around 45-47 percent annually.
Looking ahead, it is unlikely that deposit interest rates will rise further unless there is a significant increase in economic uncertainties and a continued exit of foreign investors. However, given the complexity of global markets, the possibility of further rate hikes remains low unless there are drastic changes in inflation figures.
