Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Faculty of Health Sciences Vice Dean Assoc. Dr. Yasin Yurt, pointing out the importance of early diagnosis in scoliosis, said: He stated that not every individual diagnosed with scoliosis needs surgery, and that many children and young people can continue their daily lives actively with early diagnosis and appropriate conservative treatment methods.
In his statement within the scope of “Scoliosis Awareness Month”, EMU Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Yurt pointed out that scoliosis especially affects children and adolescents in their growing age.
Yurt advised families to consult a healthcare professional if they notice inequality in shoulder levels, one of the shoulder blades appearing more prominent, asymmetry in the waist folds, or a protrusion on the back when bending forward, especially in children between the ages of 10-18.
Yurt pointed out that scoliosis may not be noticed in the early stages because it does not cause pain most of the time, and said, “However, if left untreated, the curvature may progress, causing posture disorders, aesthetic concerns, decrease in physical functions, and in advanced cases, respiratory problems.” he said.
-“Five out of every 100 students in the Famagusta Region have scoliosis”
Dormitory noted that in a study conducted in 2023 by EMU, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, the presence of scoliosis was detected in five out of every 100 students in secondary schools in the Famagusta Region.
Stating that physiotherapy has an important place in the treatment of scoliosis, Yurt emphasized that scoliosis-specific exercise programs that are started early, individually planned and based on scientific foundations contribute to slowing down or controlling the progression of the curvature.
