The budgets of the Turkish Agency Cyprus (TAK) of 163 million 705 thousand TL and the Civil Defense Organization Presidency of 600 million TL were accepted in the Economy, Finance, Budget and Planning Committee of the Assembly of the Republic.

In the Committee, the TAK budget was first discussed with the participation of Committee members, some MPs, Ministry of Finance personnel and TAK officials.

CTP Deputy Salahi Şahiner, who spoke first at the meeting, noted that TAK, with a limited staff, follows the news more impartially than other state institutions, and wished the Institution success in its work.

Şahiner shared his opinion that the Turkish Cypriot people will be informed in more detail and impartially, with the TAK Agency accompanying the foreign visits of the Ministries more.

Drawing attention to the increase in the budget, Şahiner requested information from TAK Director Fehmi Gürdallı about the current demands and deficiencies.

Taking the floor afterwards, TAK Director Fehmi Gürdallı pointed out that the increase foreseen for additional overtime was granted for the first time this year after six years, and thanked the Ministry of Finance staff. Gürdallı noted that reporters have to constantly work overtime, as in the budget negotiations that end late at night.

Stating that three reporters will be employed to replace the retired personnel this year, and that the increase in the budget is due to this, Gürdallı stated that there is no increase in the number of personnel, but they are trying to maintain the number. Gürdallı gave information about the vehicles that were worn out in the Institution and that they requested to be replaced.

TAK Director Gürdallı also pointed out that TAK, a state news agency, reports the voices of not only government officials but also all MPs in an uncensored manner.

CTP Deputy Sami Özuslu also noted that TAK meets a significant part of the country’s news needs, and shared his satisfaction with the fact that it has returned to producing special news and special interviews, as in previous years, and stated that he found this important.

Stating that peace journalism and the use of peace language should be preferred in the news, Özuslu said that the vision in the TRNC Constitution is to live in peace, and that the use of conflicting language in the news should be avoided, and that there are public agencies of other countries that have achieved this, and that these agencies can be taken as an example.

In this context, Özuslu suggested taking some trans-political cooperation steps with the “Cyprus News Agency” in the South, “Discourses that will bring societies closer to each other are important.” he said.

Özuslu asked a series of questions about the TAK building, its branches and its activities.

TAK Director Gürdallı responded to Deputy Özuslu’s speech and noted that they were open to cooperation with the news agency in the South and different institutions.

Gürdallı emphasized that TAK, as the official news agency of the state, includes press statements from the Presidency, Prime Ministry, ministries and official institutions, but opposition parties and non-governmental organizations also make their voices heard.

Reminding that there was a TAK building that was left under construction and then reportedly planned for other purposes, Gürdallı explained that some improvements were made to the existing TAK building, whose location is much more central compared to this building. Gürdallı emphasized that, despite this, the need for a new building continues.

TAK Director Gürdallı also shared his goals for the law change with the MPs.

Then, the TAK budget was voted on. The TAK budget of 163 million 705 thousand TL was accepted by majority vote.

Following the acceptance of the TAK budget, the Civil Defense Organization budget was discussed in the Committee.

Civil Defense Organization Coordinator Levent Arıkoğlu attended the meeting.

CTP Deputy Erkut Şahali asked for information about the inventories from last year to this year.

Civil Defense Organization Coordinator Arıkoğlu stated that the Organization Presidency has a good place in the eyes of the society and noted that the promises made in equipment and inventories were not fulfilled, but they made reinforcements with their own means.

Providing information about the inventory of the organization, Arıkoğlu stated the number of tools and equipment purchased recently.

Then the voting started. The budget of 600 million TL was accepted unanimously.

Budget negotiations continue with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
