Batken Prepares to Host Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Border Commissions Meeting

Border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to be opened soon after 94% described

The state border line between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan has been 94 percent described, with expectations that the border will be opened soon after three years of closure. This announcement was made by the head of Sughd region of Tajikistan, Rajabboy Akhmadzoda, at a press conference on July 26.

The commission assigned to describe the border line between the two countries has been working diligently since 2022.

“Currently, 94 percent of the border line has been fully described. We believe that the issue will be resolved positively in the near future,” Akhmadzoda stated.

Recent visits by representatives of Kyrgyzstan and the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan to disputed territories in Chorkuh and Vorukh have furthered progress on defining the border. Akhmadzoda praised the active work of the commission and expressed hope for the soon signing of documents.

Although the head of Sughd region did not specify the exact location of the remaining six percent of disputed territories, he did reveal that the next meeting of the commission is scheduled to take place in Batken city, Kyrgyzstan, from August 11 to August 17.

It is important to note that the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan has been closed since clashes occurred on September 14-17, 2021. However, with substantial progress in describing the border line, there is optimism for the re-opening of the border in the near future.
