Bektur Asanov to Undergo Surgery in Kempir-Abad Case

Bektur Asanov, the accused in the Kempir-Abad case, is in need of urgent surgical treatment and will be taken to the hospital for the necessary procedure, according to the press service of the State Penitentiary Service. The former governor of Jalal-Abad region reportedly slipped and fell while taking a shower on December 4, resulting in pain in his cervical spine. He underwent an MRI on December 14, which led to a recommendation for surgical treatment, a recommendation that Asanov initially abstained from.
After further examinations by doctors from the Main Medical Department of the State Penitentiary Service, a request was sent to the National Hospital to set a date and time for the operation. However, reports stated that Asanov was being kept in the pre-trial detention center despite his urgent need for surgery.
In the midst of these developments, a hearing for the Kempir-Abad case took place on December 27 in the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek. The case stemmed from the creation of a Committee for the protection of the Kempir-Abad reservoir and subsequent mass arrests of individuals involved in the committee and related protests and rallies.
The situation has garnered attention from international human rights organizations such as the IPHR, OMCT, NHC, HFHR, and Freedom Now, all of which issued a statement calling for the immediate release of politicians and activists arrested in Kyrgyzstan.
The developments in the Kempir-Abad case highlight a complex intersection of issues including political activism, human rights, and the administration of justice. Asanov’s case in particular underscores the importance of providing necessary medical care to individuals in custody, regardless of their legal circumstances.
