Frauds in Vinegar Detected: Expert Warns About Health Risks
The Çukurova University Central Research Laboratory (ÇÜMERLAB) Director Prof. Dr. Serkan Selli has revealed that various frauds have been detected in vinegar in recent years. Vinegar, a crucial commercial food ingredient in Turkey and exported to many European countries, has been the subject of fraudulent activities that compromise its quality and pose health risks.
Prof. Dr. Selli noted that ÇÜMERLAB receives over 1000 vinegar samples annually from various producers and companies across Turkey to investigate the quality parameters. These samples are thoroughly examined using various analysis methods on special devices.
The director emphasized that it is nearly impossible for consumers to detect these frauds by simply looking at the external appearance of vinegar. He warned that some unscrupulous individuals are diluting vinegar with synthetic acetic acid, adding color and flavoring substances, and then marketing it as natural, thus misleading the public. This poses serious health risks, especially for those with stomach and digestive system disorders.
Sharing the results of their analysis, Prof. Dr. Serkan Selli revealed that 10% of the vinegars tested at ÇÜMERLAB showed signs of fraudulent activity. In particular, apple and grape vinegars were found to contain almost no apples and grapes, and white vinegar was found to contain synthetic acetic acid.
In light of these findings, Prof. Dr. Selli urged for increased inspections by the ministry to protect public health and prevent unfair gains. He stressed the importance of consumers being vigilant and cautious, especially when purchasing apple and grape vinegar.
