Title: Beware of Sweet Deception: Baklava Manufacturer Exposed for Shortchanging Customers
A baklava manufacturer named Mehmet Yildirim has been caught engaging in deceptive practices by playing with the weight of their products. According to a report by Canal D, Yildirim admitted to tampering with the weight of the boxes containing baklava, allowing them to charge customers more for less product.
Yildirim confessed, “The number of companies in Turkey that engage in this practice can be counted on the fingers of two hands. On average, we play with the weight by 100 grams. For example, if a box of baklava is supposed to weigh 1400 grams, we sell it as if it weighs 1400 pounds.”
The deceptive tactic works by tricking customers into paying for a heavier weight of baklava than they actually receive. For instance, if a box is labeled as 2 kilograms and weighs 1800 grams, customers end up paying for 2000 grams, but only receiving 1800 grams.
Consumer Association President Levent Küçük has urged customers to be vigilant and report such incidents. He emphasized the importance of legal regulations that require the net weight of products to be accurately determined and disclosed. Customers who suspect they have been shortchanged can file complaints with the relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Commerce or the Provincial Directorate of Commerce.
In light of this revelation, it is essential for consumers to be cautious when purchasing baklava or any other products where the weight is a crucial factor. By staying informed and holding manufacturers accountable, customers can protect themselves from falling victim to such deceptive practices.
