Biden Administration Announces $20 Billion Investment in Clean Energy Projects
The Biden administration has revealed plans to invest $20 billion in clean energy projects, including the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, retrofitting homes for energy efficiency, and providing battery backup power to communities, according to NBC News.
These investments, spread across two grant competitions, are intended to support communities that have historically faced underinvestment, state senior administration officials.
Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted the investment during a speech at Coppin State University in Baltimore, which was also attended by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan and members of Congress. Harris emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis and its impact on communities across the United States, such as droughts, flooding, and wildfire smoke.
She stated, “The climate crisis impacts everybody, but it does not impact all communities equally. Poor communities, rural communities, native communities, and communities of color are often the hardest hit and the least able to recover.”
The two competitions, namely the National Clean Investment Fund and the Clean Communities Investment Accelerator, will allocate $14 billion and $6 billion, respectively, for clean energy projects. The funding is part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, established through last year’s Inflation Reduction Act.
Both competitions will prioritize funding for low-income and disadvantaged communities, including rural and tribal areas, as well as communities concerned with environmental justice. The White House has stated that at least 40 percent of funds from the $14 billion competition and all funds from the $6 billion competition will be directed towards these communities.
Harris emphasized that these investments will not only improve energy-efficient systems and benefit public health by promoting clean air and water but also help families with their budgets.
Interested applicants have until October 12 to submit their proposals, and selection decisions will be made by March 2024. This timeline allows grantees to commence work on projects as early as July 2024, as per a senior administration official. The Environmental Protection Agency will be conducting public webinars on the competitions in the coming weeks.
Prior to the announcement, Vice President Harris and Administrator Regan had a briefing with local climate leaders.
This announcement concludes the Biden administration’s Investing in America tour, during which senior administration officials highlighted the president’s economic agenda in various locations throughout the country.
