BIG Executive Director Joins 58th Session of UN Human Rights Council

During the 58th session of the Human Rights Council at the UN office in Geneva, the Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), Abbas Abbasov, shed light on the social and economic issues stemming from colonialism policies. Abbasov highlighted the lack of rights and access to essential services in France’s colonial territories – Kanaky (New Caledonia) and French Guiana.
In an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur, Abbasov underscored the challenges faced by the people in these territories in terms of healthcare, education, and other basic social services. He pointed out the violation of fundamental principles outlined in international agreements, such as human dignity, individual freedom, the right to education, and more.
The remarks made by Abbasov draw attention to the ongoing consequences of colonialism and the urgent need to address the disparities and injustices faced by the affected populations. This discussion at the UN forum serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring equitable access to essential services for all individuals, regardless of their geographic location or historical background.
