BIG to Host International Conference on Decolonization at UN Headquarters

An international conference titled “Decolonization: The Quiet Revolution” is set to take place on April 15 at the UN headquarters in New York. The event is organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), aiming to delve into the lasting impacts of the colonial legacy on economic, political, and social aspects.

Participants of the conference will engage in discussions surrounding the efforts of indigenous peoples who continue to grapple with the consequences of colonial policies as they strive for political and economic independence. Key obstacles faced by these communities in their decolonization journey will also be explored.

Leaders and members of national resistance movements from various overseas territories, including Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Polynesia, will be in attendance. Representatives from the International Decolonization Front, human rights advocates, politicians, and decolonization experts from former French colonies are also expected to participate.

One of the central topics of discussion will be the challenges posed by France’s governance models and institutional mechanisms, inhibiting the self-determination and decolonization rights of indigenous peoples. The BIG delegation will further engage in the annual session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent during their visit.

This conference offers a platform for stakeholders to exchange insights and perspectives on decolonization efforts, shedding light on the significance of addressing historical injustices and empowering marginalized communities.
