Criminal Organization Case Developments in Ankara
In a significant legal development, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has made a motion to change the charges against several defendants involved in a notorious criminal organization case. The investigation traces back to 2022 when the accused allegedly attempted to extort money through a WhatsApp message sent to Ankara’s Governor, Vasip Şahin. This led to their arrest as part of an extensive investigation into blackmail and other crimes.
The case, which is under review by the Ankara 12th High Criminal Court, includes eight defendants facing serious allegations, including establishing a criminal organization, unlawful capture, and threats. During a recent hearing on April 30, it was clarified that the actions of the defendants were isolated incidents rather than coordinated efforts, warranting a review of the gang-related allegations.
The prosecutor’s office proposed that the defendants’ actions be treated individually rather than as part of an organized criminal enterprise. This adjustment signifies a potential shift in how the court views the structure and operation of the alleged gang.
Notably, former Adana Police Chief Doğan İnci and his family are mentioned in the ongoing proceedings. Defendants Faruk Karaahmetli and Basri Tokgöz face charges related to “qualified looting” and “informing or seizing data,” with potential sentences reaching 22 years. Governor Şahin, connected to the extortion attempt, could see penalties of up to 19 years.
Other defendants in the case are also being prosecuted for various crimes, including threats and insults. The indictment suggests a strong hierarchical structure within the accused group, with references to gang leaders holding code names like "Uzun Ağa" and "Poison." Victims have reportedly been coerced into submission through the release of sensitive images.
