Bishkek Acquires Two Landfills in Territorial Reform

Bishkek Receives Two Landfills as Part of Administrative-Territorial Reform

Bishkek, March 28, 2025 – In a recent announcement at a session of the Bishkek City Council, Vice Mayor Ramiz Aliyev revealed that the capital has received two landfills as part of the ongoing administrative-territorial reform.

The landfills in the villages of Orok and Novopavlovka are now under Bishkek’s jurisdiction. However, the landfill in Orok was operating without proper permits, leading to its closure. On the other hand, the landfill in Novopavlovka, while having the necessary documents, is not operating in compliance with sanitary standards as there is no proper fencing in place.

Ramiz Aliyev highlighted that approximately 100 tons of garbage are dumped at the Novopavlovka landfill daily, and it is already 80 percent full. This poses a significant challenge for waste management in the area.

It is important to note that Kyrgyzstan underwent an administrative-territorial reform in 2024, resulting in an expansion of Bishkek’s territory to nearly 40,000 hectares from the previous 12,900. This expansion included the incorporation of some residential areas and rural districts from the Alamedin and Sokuluk districts of Chui region into the city.

Efforts are now being made to address the issues at the newly acquired landfills and ensure proper waste management practices are put in place to protect the environment and public health in Bishkek.
