Bishkek Atlas: Mapping Landslides
The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), recently organized a presentation in Bishkek to introduce the publication titled “Atlas of Landslides in the Kyrgyz Republic.” The main goal of this publication is to enhance public awareness about landslides in the country.
Andrea Tamburini, one of the authors of the publication, highlighted the fact that Kyrgyzstan is particularly vulnerable to landslides due to factors such as rainfall patterns, geology, topography, and high seismic activity.
Anarkul Aitaliev, the director of the department responsible for implementing the project “Landslide Risk Management in the Kyrgyz Republic,” shared that a list of 46 subprojects has been identified. These subprojects focus on studying and researching 46 landslide risk areas in the country.
The atlas provides essential data and maps concerning landslide hazard, vulnerability, and risk on both a national scale and at specific locations. It also offers insights into an integrated approach for addressing landslide risk and serves as a valuable resource for decision-making and analysis related to landslide risk management in Kyrgyzstan.
This comprehensive publication is a significant step towards mitigating the impact of landslides in Kyrgyzstan and ensuring the safety of the population.
