Bishkek City Hall Plans to Install “Smart” Water Meters in Residential Areas

Bishkek City Hall has announced plans to install “smart” water meters in residential areas to ensure the rational use of water. The Mayor of the capital, Aibek Dzhunushaliev, made this announcement at a joint meeting of the parliamentary factions Ata Jurt Kyrgyzstan, Ishenim, Yntymak, and Mekenchil parliamentary group.

Dzhunushaliev highlighted that the implementation of these meters is crucial for monitoring and controlling water usage in all residential areas. He emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent water shortages, especially during summer months.

To address the issue of water scarcity, comprehensive studies were conducted at the Orto-Alysh water intake. The cleaning of artificially recharged lakes and maintenance of well filters, which had not been done for 30 years, were some of the key steps taken to improve water availability.

The mayor informed that a new reservoir was constructed at the Orto-Alysh water intake, and a contract was signed with the Chui Main Water Management Department for the supply of 22 million cubic meters of water. Due to the decreasing water levels, urgent measures were taken to prevent water crisis situations.

Furthermore, efforts are ongoing to reconstruct the Bashkara-Suu, Zone, and KhBO water intakes. Significant funds amounting to 150 million soms were allocated from the state budget for drilling wells in Bashkara-Suu, where five wells have been successfully installed by the municipality.

The installation of “smart” water meters and the various water management initiatives are part of the city’s commitment to ensuring sustainable water resource management and meeting the needs of its residents.
