Bishkek Trials Chinese Catalytic Converters to Fight Air Pollution

Bishkek City Hall Tests Chinese Catalytic Converters to Reduce Vehicle Emissions

Bishkek City Hall has recently initiated a pilot project in collaboration with Qingdao University in China to evaluate the effectiveness of catalytic converters in reducing harmful vehicle emissions. This project comes as a response to the pressing issue of air pollution in the capital city, caused by various factors including emissions from vehicles.

As part of the experiment, catalytic converters developed by Qingdao University have been installed on the vehicles of Bishkek City Council Deputy Chairman Bolot Ibragimov, as well as popular bloggers Maksim Zolotykh and Aibek Erkinbek uulu, known as Aiba Bez Kupyur. The Ministry of Natural Resources specialists have conducted measurements using a gas analyzer before and after the installation of these devices to assess the reduction in harmful substances like carbon dioxide and hydrogen oxide.

The authorities in Bishkek have identified the main sources of air pollution in the city, with the private sector accounting for 40% due to the use of coal for heating, and transport contributing 30% with a total of 333,801 registered vehicles, most of them being over 15 years old.

If the pilot project demonstrates the efficiency of these catalytic converters, it could potentially lead to their widespread adoption, especially for older vehicles. The findings from this study will help the city administration in formulating strategies to address the environmental challenges, particularly during the winter season when pollution levels are at their peak. In addition to this initiative, the authorities are considering other measures such as fleet modernization and transitioning to environmentally friendly fuels.

“This project is part of a holistic approach towards combating pollution. We must leverage all available technologies to safeguard public health,” stated the City Hall official. This endeavor reflects a proactive stance by Bishkek City Hall in tackling the issue of air pollution and striving towards a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.
