Boat operators in Istanbul protest cancelation of plates
Several boat operators in Istanbul took to the sea to protest against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) for their decision to cancel boat plates in the Golden Horn region to the Bosphorus.
The operators displayed banners on their boats with messages such as “Golden Horn tradesman to the cancellation of the plate”, “the Golden Horn trades are not occupying, the landlord” and “Back to the wrong decision of the IMM”.
Onur Hüsrevoğlu, president of the EMBAKTUR Tur Yolcu and Tourism Marine Motor Carriers Cooperative, explained that there are 5 cooperatives in the Golden Horn region and that they are protesting the IMM’s decision.
Hüsrevoğlu mentioned that the cancellation of boat plates was discussed at a meeting two weeks ago, but it was postponed due to other urgent matters on the agenda. There are 205 plates subject to cancellation, which employ around 5 thousand people. These plates range from 18 meters to 42 meters.
The operators claim that the IMM created a draft for the cancellation of the plates without consulting any of the tradesmen. They argue that the draft stated that these boat lines were not in use and decided to cancel them without proper consultation.
The boat operators are demanding that their voices be heard and that a fair decision be made regarding the cancellation of the plates. They are urging the IMM to reconsider their decision and to involve them in the discussion process.
