Boiling Point: Cycling’s Upheaval – BRTK Update

Cycling Clubs Initiative Urges Sports Department to Address Autonomy Issue

The Cycling Clubs Initiative has issued a statement urging the Sports Department to urgently address the issue of the Cycling Federation losing its autonomy. According to the initiative, failure to address this issue will result in legal action being taken to the Supreme Administrative Court with all relevant parties involved.

The statement highlights the recent problems experienced with the President and the board of directors of the Turkish Cypriot Cycling Federation, which have been escalating in intensity in recent times. As a result, the initiative has called for an Extraordinary General Assembly to the Federation Management within the framework of the legal legislation.

In accordance with Article 14 of the Physical Education and Sports Law No. 67/1999, the initiative emphasizes the mandatory provision that a federation loses its autonomy if the number of active sports associations and sports club members falls below five, or if the general assembly cannot meet within the periods specified in its statute.

Furthermore, the initiative points out that according to the 2nd paragraph of Article 16 of the same law, sports federation members, sports associations, or sports clubs must have participated in the competitions organized by the federation within one year before the general assembly date in order to vote. With the Turkish Cypriot Cycling Federation lacking the necessary qualifications as per these mandatory provisions, the initiative asserts that the federation has fallen below the required standards for autonomy.

The initiative has called upon the TRNC Prime Ministry and the Board of Directors of the Sports Department to fulfill their legal duty in addressing this issue. Failure to do so will result in legal action being taken against the institutions that have neglected this matter.

The Cycling Clubs Association Initiative is adamant in its pursuit of fairness and adherence to the law in the administration of cycling sports, and is prepared to take the necessary steps to ensure that the autonomy of the Cycling Federation is upheld.
