Bolu Mayor Suspects Fire Department Manager is Scared: Kartalkaya Statement
The Fire Brigade Manager of Bolu Municipality made some alarming statements during a recent TV program aired on Sözcü TV. In the live broadcast, the Manager expressed concerns about reporting potential safety issues in hotels, particularly mentioning the fear of potential legal repercussions.
He stated, “Firefighter Manager may be scared. If I report the shortcomings about such a hotel, the prosecutor’s office may have sued me, saying ‘This is a big business tomorrow’.” This revelation came after a tragic fire incident, where the hotel owner had reportedly withdrawn from addressing the safety concerns, even after statements made by the Minister.
In response to these statements, Independent Istanbul Deputy Cemal Enginyurt condemned the fear-based decision-making, pointing out the consequences of prioritizing personal safety over public well-being. He emphasized, “78 people died because of the fear of one man. The man should declare control and take responsibility for the tragic loss of lives. Is he afraid of God or of the consequences of his actions?”
The incident further highlighted the need for accountability and prioritizing safety measures in establishments, such as hotels, to prevent avoidable tragedies. As the owner of the hotel where the fire occurred was arrested, it serves as a grim reminder of the importance of upholding safety standards and regulations in all public spaces.
