Border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Reopen on March 13

Border Between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Reopen Tomorrow

After four years of closure, the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is set to reopen on March 13. The Plenipotentiary Representative of the President in Batken region confirmed this information to 24.kg news agency.

The Presidents of the two countries will take part in the opening ceremony of Kairagach and Kyzyl-Bel checkpoints online.

The border was closed in May 2021 after an armed conflict near Golovnoy water distribution point in Batken region. The conflict resulted in casualties, injuries, and the use of army units and heavy equipment. The Prosecutor General’s Office launched pre-trial proceedings under the article “Crime against peace” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, labeling Tajikistan’s actions as a military invasion.

At that time, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Ulukbek Maripov announced the suspension of all movements across the border until the issues on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border were resolved.

Today, the head of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, arrived in the Kyrgyz Republic for a state visit. Bilateral documents are expected to be signed, including potentially an agreement on the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border.

The reopening of the border signifies a positive step towards reconciliation and improved relations between the two neighboring countries.
