Tragic Fire Breaks out at Ski Resort in Turkey
A devastating fire broke out at Grand Kartal Hotel, located at the summit of the Köroğlu Mountains in the ski center of Kartalkaya on January 21. The incident resulted in the loss of 78 lives and left 50 people injured. The fire started in the restaurant part on the 4th floor of the hotel, with the emergency call being made at 03:21 to the 112 Emergency Call Center.
Following the incident, 26 individuals, including the hotel owner Halit Ergül, were taken into custody as part of the investigation launched by the Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Subsequently, 19 suspects were arrested on charges of ‘causing the death and injury of more than one person by conscious negligence’ after being referred to court.
As the investigation unfolded, details emerged regarding how the fire originated. It was reported that during breakfast preparations in the kitchen, an angry oil on the grill caught fire, leading to panic among the kitchen staff. In a desperate attempt to extinguish the flames, water was thrown on the burning oil, causing the fire to escalate rapidly. The flames eventually spread to the hotel, resulting in a catastrophic outcome.
Among those arrested in connection with the incident are Cook Faisal Yaver and kitchen employees Mehmet Gündüz, Yusuf Karahanlı, and Fidan Kurç. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community and has highlighted the importance of adhering to safety protocols in all establishments to prevent such disasters from occurring in the future.
