Hamas Holds Positive Talks in Doha, Qatar for Ceasefire and Prisoner Exchange Agreement
In a recent written statement, Hamas announced that they had positive and serious discussions in Doha, the capital of Qatar. These talks, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, aimed at achieving a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement. However, Hamas emphasized that reaching an agreement would only be possible if Israel refrains from putting forth new conditions.
Back in November 2023, Hamas and Israel engaged in a mutual prisoner exchange, which also led to a temporary ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Unfortunately, Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza shortly after the ceasefire.
It is reported that Hamas is currently holding approximately 100 Israeli prisoners, making the issue of a prisoner exchange crucial for both sides.
In the meantime, there were claims in the international press that former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to Cairo to discuss the prisoner exchange. However, Israeli Speaker Dostri refuted these claims, stating that Netanyahu did not make such a visit to Cairo.
Egyptian media outlets have highlighted the intensive efforts made by Cairo and Doha to establish a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Hamas also released a statement confirming that positive talks for a ceasefire had taken place in Qatar.
On the Israeli side, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz expressed optimism about reaching a prisoner exchange and ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Katz emphasized the importance of bringing back the captives and stated that Israel is committed to reaching an agreement, even a partial one.
Additionally, Prime Minister Netanyahu recently visited the buffer zone on Mount Hermon in Syria, which was occupied by Israel after December 7. The visit was described as a “situation assessment,” where Netanyahu reviewed the Israeli army’s deployment in the region.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also voiced his support for the prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas, stating that it is in line with the wishes of the Israeli people. These developments indicate ongoing diplomatic efforts towards achieving a ceasefire and resolving the prisoner exchange issue in the region.
