Britain sends Ukraine second $3 billion war loan installment
Britain Provides $990 Million to Ukraine for Air Defense and Artillery Purchases
In a move to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, Britain has sent Ukraine 752 million pounds ($990 million) to purchase air defenses and artillery. This funding is part of a larger $50 billion international loan program that is backed by frozen Russian assets, as confirmed by Britain’s government.
Finance minister Rachel Reeves emphasized the changing global landscape and the impact of Russian aggression in Ukraine. The Group of Seven advanced economies had agreed on a lending package in October 2024, but subsequent changes in the United States’ approach to the conflict, following the election of Donald Trump, led to the finalization of Britain’s contribution in March.
With the United States displaying increased reluctance to provide security in Europe, Britain announced in February its decision to raise defense spending from 2.3% of national income to 2.5% by 2027 and further to 3% sometime after 2029.
The payment made to Ukraine on Monday is the second installment of three, totaling 2.26 billion pounds (approximately $3 billion). The first installment was made on March 6, and the final payment is scheduled for next year.
Defense Minister John Healey outlined that Britain will provide Ukraine with a total of 4.5 billion pounds ($5.93 billion) in support this year. These funds will be utilized to acquire air defenses, artillery, and spare parts for vehicles and other equipment, bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
