British Prime Minister Asserts Sovereignty in Removing Planes Bound for Rwanda

British Parliament Approves “New Rwanda Plan” to Tackle Irregular Migration

Chancellor Rishi Sunak addressed the press last night to discuss the recent approval of the “new Rwanda plan” in the House of Commons of the British Parliament. The plan, also known as the Rwanda Security Bill, has now been sent to the House of Lords for further consideration.

Sunak urged opposition members in the House of Lords to support the Rwanda Security Bill, emphasizing the government’s efforts to combat irregular migration to the UK. He pointed out that irregular migration to the UK decreased by three-quarters in 2023, while irregular migration to Europe increased, and argued that the new Rwanda plan would further reduce irregular migration.

The Chancellor criticized the main opposition Labor Party for not supporting the plan, stating that if they had been in power, the progress made in the last year would not have been possible. He warned that without the Rwanda plan, the UK would be at a higher risk of irregular migrant boats crossing the English Channel, and would be enabling illegal commercial activities of human smugglers.

Addressing questions about other plans to stop irregular migration and deport immigrants, Sunak revealed that bank accounts of 7,000 irregular immigrants had been closed, and approximately 20,000 people had been deported to their countries, including around 5,000 to Albania. He emphasized that raids and border controls on irregular immigrants have been increased.

In response to concerns about the possibility of planes carrying deported irregular immigrants to Rwanda being allowed to take off before the general elections, Sunak emphasized that he is eager to move forward as soon as possible, but stressed that the decision lies with the House of Lords.

Sunak also addressed criticism regarding the European Court of Human Rights’ decision to stop the deportation of immigrants to Rwanda and the potential violation of international law. He firmly stated that no foreign court can prevent the implementation of the Rwanda plan, and that the bill has been approved by Parliament to prioritize decisions made by ministers.

The Chancellor highlighted that the Rwanda plan aims to expedite efforts against irregular migration and immigrants, mentioning the evacuation of 50 hotels accommodating immigrants and the fast-tracked decision-making process for asylum requests.

After being deemed unlawful by the Supreme Court last November, the new Rwanda plan was brought to parliament in December and was approved in the House of Commons last night. However, it now awaits approval from the House of Lords before being submitted to King Charles III for final approval.

The House of Lords may also send the bill to the House of Commons for reconsideration. Sunak emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the plan progresses, stating, “I work every day to ensure that Rwanda planes take off.” The decision from the House of Lords is eagerly awaited as the UK government continues to focus on addressing irregular migration.
