BRTK Refuses to Support Comfort Zone of Greek Cypriots, Embraces Consensus Model
President Ersin Tatar of the Turkish Cypriot side has made a strong statement regarding the ongoing situation with the Greek Cypriots. In response to the speech made by Greek Cypriot Administration President Nikos Hristodulidis at the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, President Tatar emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side will not engage in fruitless processes that only benefit the comfort zone of the Greek Cypriots.
Tatar highlighted the importance of continuing to work on areas of cooperation that will benefit both parties while also fighting for the confirmation of the Turkish Cypriot inherent rights. He criticized the Greek Cypriot leader for not recognizing the calls made by the President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to defend their rights and recognize their state.
President Tatar stressed that the Turkish Cypriot side will not participate in processes that contribute to the comfort zone of the Greek Cypriots, as the federation model has failed to provide a compromise for both parties. He emphasized that negotiations based on the federation model have been unsuccessful and have prevented the fair situation on the island, leading to unfair isolation and hindering the access to basic human rights for the Turkish Cypriot People.
Tatar pointed out that the Greek Cypriot leadership has been usurping sovereignty and status for over 61 years, refusing to share governance and prosperity with the Turkish Cypriots. He mentioned the Happy Peace Operation carried out by Turkey in 1974, which brought peace to the island and allowed two states and two people to live without security concerns for 50 years.
In conclusion, President Tatar’s message to the Greek Cypriot leader is clear – the Turkish Cypriot side will continue to fight for their inherent rights and work towards cooperation that benefits both parties. The federation model has failed to provide a compromise, and it is essential to confirm their rights and equal status for a resolution to the Cyprus issue.
