Budapest Airport Traffic Concerns: Renovations Impacting Public Transport – with Map

New Transportation Changes in Budapest Due to Major Renovation Projects

Budapest is bracing for significant changes in traffic and public transport as major renovation projects kick off at Liszt Ferenc International Airport (Budapest Airport) and Flórián Square. These developments will affect both motorists and commuters, necessitating adjustments in travel plans in the coming months.

At Budapest Airport, renovation work has started on the bridge leading to Terminal 2 and the pick-up and drop-off area in front of the terminal, as reported by Turizmus.com. Starting from 20 February, several traffic changes will be implemented, impacting private vehicles and public transportation.

Key changes at Budapest Airport include the restriction of private vehicles from accessing the departure level, reduction in size of the pick-up and drop-off area on the arrival level, and relocation of the final stop of the 100E airport bus. Passengers are advised to use designated parking areas and follow updated road signs.

Meanwhile, the renovation of the Flórián Square flyovers will begin on 1 March, with the southern flyover set to be closed until spring 2026. During the first phase of renovations, car traffic will be redirected to the northern flyover, with additional changes in bus routes and tram services.

To mitigate the disruptions caused by these projects, Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) recommends using alternative routes and public transport options. Tram lines 1 and 1A will increase frequency during peak hours, and commuters from Békásmegyer are encouraged to use the H5 suburban railway for downtown travel.

While these renovations are crucial for the long-term safety and efficiency of Budapest’s transportation infrastructure, travellers are advised to plan their routes in advance and allow for extra travel time. Stay updated on construction progress and follow directions from authorities to minimize inconvenience during the construction periods.
