Budapest Launches Nostalgic Trams, Buses, and Metro Services – Photos Inside!

Nostalgia Season Kicks Off in Budapest with Classic Transport
Today marks the beginning of the much-anticipated nostalgia season in Budapest, where visitors can take a trip down memory lane aboard trams, buses, and trolleybuses reminiscent of yesteryears. This year’s season features notable enhancements, including the ability to pay by card on the spot and expanded retro schedules. A highlight awaits at the end of the season, as passengers will have the opportunity to ride in "Tamara," the first Soviet metro carriage recently restored to its former glory.
A Promising Future for Nostalgic Transport
The Budapest Transport Company (BKK) has exciting plans for 2025, aiming for a vibrantly spectacular experience with nostalgic public transport vehicles. Enhancements will include increased capacity, new lines, and stations added to the timetable, as well as the convenience of on-site credit and bank card payments.
Experience Budapest with Nostalgia Tram Routes
Hop aboard nostalgia trams on routes 2, 18, and 19. Tram line 2, frequently recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful tram routes, offers a scenic ride perfect for families. Passengers can soak in sights such as the impressive Buda side, iconic bridges, the Academy of Sciences, the stunning Redout, and the majestic Hungarian Parliament while gliding alongside the Danube.
Travel along tram line 19 and take in the stunning panorama of the Buda bank of the Danube. This route meanders past notable buildings, famous baths, market halls, and lush parks. Plan your visit to include a stop at Deák Ferenc Square, where the Small Underground Museum awaits, along with access to the Buda Castle Hill Funicular.
For a truly nostalgic experience, ride the tram line 18, which travels from St. John Hospital to Kelenföld, through shaded trees and alongside the majestic Danube.
Buses and Metro
The nostalgia experience doesn’t stop with trams. The convertible Ikarus 630 bus will operate on bus line 109, encompassing a convenient downtown loop. Nostalgia tickets are priced at HUF 500 (approximately EUR 1.25), while a daily ticket will cost HUF 2,000 (around EUR 5).
A Special Send-off
As the nostalgia season approaches its conclusion in late October, BKV has prepared a special surprise: rides on Tamara, the historic Soviet metro carriage, will be available during nighttime hours on the red metro line (Metro Line 2).
This season promises a delightful blend of history and modern convenience, making it a perfect outing for locals and tourists alike. Don’t miss this chance to experience Budapest’s transport history and enjoy the sights from a unique perspective!
