Budapest’s Historic Bridge Set for Renovation, Traffic Restrictions Ahead
The Margaret Bridge cycle path in Budapest is set to undergo a major renovation project, as announced by the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK). The works will be carried out in two phases, with traffic restrictions expected during the construction period.
Starting from 8 July until 31 August, the cycle path on the northern side of the Margaret Bridge, closer to Margaret Island, will be renovated. The damaged surface will be removed and replaced with a new covering, while pavement signs and cyclist pictograms will be repainted.
During the renovation period, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to use the temporary cycle lane in the outside traffic lane or the pavement for their safety.
The project will be divided into two phases: the first phase, between 8 July and 4 August, will focus on the section between the island entrance and the Buda bridgehead. The second phase, between 4 and 31 August, will cover the area between the Pest bridgehead and the island entrance.
To accommodate the renovation works, the outer lane on the Buda side will be closed to car traffic, creating a temporary cycle lane and pedestrian section. This may result in temporary congestion on Szent István körút and on the Pozsonyi Road slip road in the direction of Margaret Bridge.
Overall, the renovation of the Margaret Bridge cycle path aims to improve safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians in Budapest.
