Budapest’s Major Road to undergo Renovation: Redevelopment Plans Unveiled

BKK Releases Plans for Redevelopment of Üllői Road in Budapest
Budapest Transport Center (BKK) has unveiled its latest redevelopment plans for one of Budapest’s busiest main roads, Üllői Road. The proposed upgrade will focus on the stretch between Nagyvárad Square and Ecseri Road, with a primary emphasis on improving bicycle infrastructure.
Üllői Road serves as a crucial radial route connecting downtown Budapest with the city’s southeastern districts. The renovation project aims to enhance the safety and appeal of the corridor for pedestrians, cyclists, and the elderly. This initiative aligns with the Budapest Mobility Plan (BMT) and the city’s traffic safety strategy, with a key focus on reducing environmental impact and urban noise pollution.
Public consultation has been initiated by BKK to gather feedback, suggestions, and comments from residents and commuters. The survey can be accessed and completed on the organization’s website until May 26, 2025.
The core of the project involves constructing physically separated, one-way bike lanes between Nagyvárad Square and Ecseri Road. Intersection crossings, traffic engineering tasks, and road construction are part of the planning work. BKK stresses the importance of upgrading existing bike lanes to improve quality and comfort, particularly in the direction of Vágóhíd Street and Gyáli Street bike lanes.
Smaller-scale enhancements are also planned between Könyves Kálmán Boulevard and Borbás Vince Promenade, which include expanding pedestrian areas and increasing green space wherever feasible.
Funding for the project’s design and construction will come from European Union funds, within the framework of the TOP Plusz-4.1.2-23 “Bike Highway” program. BKK’s funding request was approved in January 2025. If the procurement process is successful and EU funds are secured, construction plans could be finalized by the second half of 2026, with project completion expected by the second half of 2028.
The redevelopment of Üllői Road is part of a broader effort to enhance bicycle infrastructure across Budapest, establishing continuous, high-quality, one-way bike lanes and cycle paths that are at least two meters wide and physically protected where possible. These “bike highways” will connect more neighborhoods, making them accessible by bike in a safe manner.
The planned renovation of Üllői Road signifies a significant advancement in modernizing Budapest’s transportation network. Alongside improving cycling infrastructure, the project aims to expand pedestrian areas and green spaces, contributing to a more liveable and sustainable urban environment, as stated by BKK.
