Budapest’s Party District Faces New Regulations
The party district of Erzsébetváros in Budapest has long been a hotbed of contention between various stakeholders. The local government, residents, and nightclubs have been engaged in a heated debate about how to coexist harmoniously. Recently, a new ordinance was introduced in the district by Mayor Péter Niedermüller, and it has sparked reactions from business owners, residents, and even dog walkers in the area.
The new rules, detailed in a Facebook post by Niedermüller, aim to bring order to the bustling nightlife in Erzsébetváros. Pubs and restaurants are now required to have their own security guards, keep the area in front of their premises clean, and could face license revocation after three offenses. Additionally, they may have to endure extended closing hours. But the regulations don’t just affect the nightlife scene; they also impact shops, electric scooter users, and even dog walkers.
One of the significant provisions of the ordinance is a limit on the number of establishments allowed to stay open between midnight and 6 AM. According to Ábel Zsendovits, co-owner of Szimpla Kert, the regulation poses a challenge for smaller venues with capacities of up to 100-150 people by imposing additional costs for security and street cleaning. Additionally, he questions the rationale behind preventing new pubs from opening when the demand is high.
While some concerns have been raised about the potential for pub owners to sell licenses due to the cap on permits, the municipality’s press adviser, Tímea Gyarmati, insists that special opening hours licenses are non-transferable. However, opinions about the ordinance vary, with some supporting certain aspects of the regulations, such as the emphasis on street cleaning.
Despite the mixed reactions, there remain unanswered questions about the qualifications and responsibilities of security guards, leading to uncertainty about the future implications of the regulations.
