Building a Stronger European Defense Union: EC President Calls for Action
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is urging for a common defense and unity in response to the current crisis in European security. Speaking at the European Parliament Plenary joint debate in Strasbourg, France, von der Leyen emphasized the need for Europe to mobilize its resources and show courage in the face of threats.
Von der Leyen highlighted the importance of Europe taking greater charge of its own defense, noting that the continent has lowered its guard and reduced defense spending in recent years. She stressed the need to build a European Defense Union to ensure peace and security on the continent through unity and strength.
The president acknowledged that the European security order is being shaken, and that illusions about Russia’s integration into Europe’s security architecture and reliance on America’s protection have been shattered. She called for an end to these illusions and for Europe to rise to the challenge of ensuring its own security.
As von der Leyen concluded her speech, she declared that “This is Europe’s moment. And Europe will rise to it.” The message was clear: it is time for Europe to come together and take control of its own defense in order to safeguard peace and security on the continent.
