Can Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women Safely Fast? Latest Update from Turkey
One of the valid excuses for not fasting during Ramadan is pregnancy or breastfeeding. Pregnant or breastfeeding women may not fast if they fear harm to themselves or their children. While they are considered sick in a way, there are also hadiths that give them this license (Nesâî, Siyâm, 51, 62; İbn Mâce, Siyâm, 12).
A pregnant and breastfeeding woman can fast if she can bear it and the child will not be affected. It would be appropriate to consult a physician who is an expert in this field. Women who cannot fast for legitimate reasons, such as pregnancy and breastfeeding, make up for their missed fast at other times when conditions are suitable.
SHOULD POSTPRIME PEOPLE FAST?
It is haram for a woman in postpartum to perform prayer and fast. The prayer and fasting of a woman in this situation will not be valid. The jurists are in agreement on this issue (Şâfiî, el-Ümm, 1/76-77; Sahnûn, el-Müdevvene, 1/151; Haddâd, el-Cevhera, 1/29; İbn Hazm, el-Muhallâ, 1/380; Merğinânî, el-Hidâye, 1/33-34; İbn Kudâme, el-Mughnî, 1/223-224; İbn Abidîn, Reddü’l-muhtâr, 2/371; Şevkânî, es-Seylü’l-cerrâr, 1/300). There is a consensus among all sects that prayers skipped during menstruation will not be missed and fasts should be performed after purification (İbnü’l-Münzir, el-İcmâ’, 47-48; Nevevî, Şerhu Müslim, 4/26; San’ânî, Sübülü’s -selam, 1/105; Cezîrî, el-Mezâhibü’l-erbe’a, 1/123).
The basis of the ijma in question is Hz. It is the hadiths of the Prophet (pbuh) and the practice of the companions. As a matter of fact, Hz. Upon a question asked to her on this subject, Aisha said; He said that during the time of the Prophet Muhammad, they were commanded to make up the fasts they did not keep when they menstruated, but they were not obliged to make up the prayers they did not perform (Bukhari, Hayz, 20).
